Sisters in Marrakech

As you know if you have been following my blog, my big sister is the best.  Not just among all of my sisters, but probably among all sisters everywhere.  Just a few weeks ago, my husband and I got to spend a long weekend with my her in Marrakech.  Not only did we go swimming every day, do yoga on our balcony, and spend some quality sister time together, we also took hundreds of photos documenting our sisterhood.

We’ve gotten better at matching over the years.

My sister is now really good at yoga, so we were more creative with our sister photos this time than usual.

Not all photos were a success, but we came out with some great ones in the end!

My Best Sister now lives in the U.S., and is quite happy being there.  My husband and I are planning to move to Boston next fall, where I’ll do my masters.  Thanks to my sister we are excited about things like seeing my family regularly, living somewhere with more trees than cars, and eating yams and black beans.  And of course, having much more regular Best Sister time.

Sister Vacation in London

Although it was hard to leave Morocco, even just for two months, my summer started with the best kind of vacation.  I spent a week in London with my favorite sister (don’t worry, she’s also my only sister).  The week started with a couple rainy days, but once it cleared up we were able to fully enjoy London’s beautiful parks, canal, and numerous free and clean public bathrooms, which most certainly could not be found in Casablanca.

Our toes enjoy the fresh air too.

There is such a great difference between where life is conducted between London and Casa; in London, one could spend the entire day out of the home, and be able to find easy meals, bathrooms, water fountains, and entertainment.  If you do decide to return home for a meal, you could buy your vegetables pre-chopped so that you wouldn’t spend much time in the kitchen.  In Casablanca, it would be hard to find such accommodations, especially for a female.  Spending time in the home is probably more common, and homes are perhaps more spacious.

My sister and I made good use of the parks, often walking for hours.  We concurrently made good use of the water fountains, public bathrooms, and several coffee shops.  We ate some wonderful Thai food, enjoyed some museums, and went for daily morning runs by the canal.  And of course we took lots and lots of pictures of ourselves, mostly in matching outfits, in celebration of being best sisters.

We are able to match in any length of skirt.

Last weekend my sister came to visit from London, and we spent three days together in Casablanca and Rabat.  My sister is pretty cool if you don’t know her; she studies infectious diseases, she worked in India for two years, she speaks an impressive array of languages (and their Pig Latin variations), and she has pretty amazing self-timer camera skills.ImageOur outfits kind of match because we’re sisters.  Also, our mom made the sweater I’m wearing.  Aren’t we a cool family?  My dad is also cool, if you were wondering.

I visited my sister last fall around this same time, when she had just moved to London and I had been in Morocco (but not yet in Casa) for only a few months.  I think I visited her for a total of four days, but it seemed like forever because it was so challenging to get there from Ifrane, which is up in the Atlas Mountains and does not have a train station.  It also seemed like a long trip because everything was so different; the weather, the people, the scenery, the language, etc.  I also remember it giving me a lot of perspective on my own situation, which was certainly the case again with this visit, even though I didn’t go anywhere.

We tried to match our outfits, but our eyes already matched.

Sometimes I get totally caught up in my own life, my job, my friends, and my concerns, and a quick sister-visit reminds me of who I was before I came here and the values I grew up with.  I realize how my opinions are shaped by my family, and how others might have strong opinions based on what they were taught.  I also had a really good time bargain shopping, eating ice cream in November, going on long walks and on runs, watching Hindi movies with dubious messages, and matching our outfits to maximize our photo-taking opportunities.ImageI’d re-gift her flowers any day!

I hope my sister visits me again soon!  London is not so far away, and we are really so good at being sisters.
